In November of last year, Apple officially launched its mobile payment option, Apple Pay, in Australia thanks to a partnership with American Express.
While that immediately limited support for Apple Pay out of the gate in the region, it’s finally expanding thanks to support for more credit and debit cards. Specifically, the mobile payment option is now supported by the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ). That means Apple Pay users in the area can now use the banking group’s credit and debit cards with the service.
Reuters has confirmed the new addition for those in Australia, and the official ANZ webpage is also reflecting the newly-launched support. It also indicates that ANZ cardholders can expect their ANZ Access Advantage, ANZ Rewards Platinum Card, and the ANZ Business Advantage cards are all supported. Both Visa and American Express cards from the banking group are supported as well.
It’s worth noting that the ANZ banking group is one of the four major banking entities in the region, so it would appear that Apple is beginning to make some headway in Australia. However, it doesn’t guarantee that Apple has support for the other banks’ cards on the way.
As it stands, Apple Pay is currently available in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Canada, and in Singapore as well. In some instances, like in Singapore, Canada, and previously in Australia, Apple Pay support is only available with a limited partnership, like with American Express.
If you can use Apple Pay in your area, have you tried it out yet?
